Unexpected Finishes Make Metal Roofs Beautiful

Metal roofs have come a long way from those structures found on outbuildings that charmingly rust or grow a patina over time. Now, they’re increasingly found on residences. Because of that, they have to look good. New and unique finishes add beauty to metal roofs and increase the curb appeal of a house. Here are some of these finishes.

Textured or Crinkle Paint

Textured paint is a type of finish that contains silicone polyester, which bounces sunlight around and makes the color of your roof really shimmer. The finish is also tough and protects your metal roof from minor damage. It hides dings and dents because it reduces glare as well. Much like luxury vinyl plank flooring, this finish has many layers, and the texture of the top coat not only adds beauty but also makes it easier for a roofing professional to walk on the roof.

PVDF Paint Finish

This type of finish, whose full name is polyvinylidene fluoride, seems new but has actually been around since the 1960s. It’s a type of fluorite resin. If you remember your high school chemistry, fluoride is an “unhappy” atom that bonds furiously to just about everything, including other fluoride atoms. This powerful bond allows PVDF finishes to resist rust, staining, and damage from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. PVDF finish doesn’t need much maintenance and can come in a rainbow of colors that complement your home perfectly. This finish can give the look of antique brass to sheet metal, or give your metal roof a dignified, weathered patina. PVDF can also make your metal roof resemble wood without wood’s drawbacks. These include flammability and vulnerability to pests, mold, and rot. Two kinds of PVDF finishes are powder coating and stone coating.

Powder Coating

Powder coating happens when powder is applied to the metal roof and then gets heat-cured. This creates a coating that’s very tough and protects the roof against damage from the sun, time, and chemicals. Powder-coated metal roof shingles have a smooth and glossy look and can come in many colors and shades.

Stone Coating

With this type of finish, a roofing professional layers adhesive onto raw metal, then covers it with chips of natural stone covered with ceramic. This protects the roof from the sun, but it doesn’t resist fading as well as powder coating. Because of this and other problems, roofing contractors usually prefer powder coating as a finish.

Unique and uncommon finishes make a metal roof stand out. If you’re thinking of roof replacement and want more information about these finishes, call our professionals at North Creek Roofing in Mill Creek, WA.
